“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” — Isaiah 43:19
There are seasons in life that feel like barren deserts. Maybe it comes after a loss, a heartbreak, a failed dream, or when you’ve had to start over from scratch. The land seems dry. The path seems unclear. The future feels empty.
Yet God speaks a powerful promise: “I am doing something new — even here.” The wilderness is not a place of defeat; it is fertile ground for miracles. God specializes in bringing life where there seems to be none. He can make roads where there was no path and rivers where only dryness existed. Even when your eyes cannot yet see the change, rest in this truth: the new thing is already beginning.
Faith is not always about knowing how or when; it’s about trusting that God can — and will — bring life out of what seems lifeless.
“Where you see emptiness, God sees the perfect ground for a miracle.”
Consider Naomi, who lost her husband and sons. Heartbroken, she returned to Bethlehem feeling empty and defeated. But in the midst of that barren season, God was quietly preparing a new chapter. Through Ruth, her faithful daughter-in-law gleaning leftovers in the fields, God opened a way forward. Ruth married Boaz, and from their line came King David — and ultimately Jesus Christ. Out of Naomi’s wilderness came a legacy of hope, restoration, and divine purpose.
- God brings new beginnings even out of our most barren seasons.
- Loss is not the end; it can become the soil for something greater.
- God specializes in making rivers flow in the deserts of our lives.
- Faith requires seeing beyond the present dryness to God’s unseen work.
Where in your life right now do you see a “wilderness”? How can you begin trusting God to make a road or bring a river there?
Identify one area of your life that feels like a desert — perhaps finances, family relationships, career, or emotional healing. Invite God to do a new thing in that space. Speak it aloud: “Lord, I believe You can bring life even here.” Take small steps of faith today: look for signs of new beginnings, engage in actions that align with God’s promises, and remain patient as He works in ways you may not yet see. Remember, rivers often begin as unseen springs beneath the surface.
Father, even when life feels empty or broken, help me to trust that You are doing something new. Turn my wilderness into a place of hope and renewal. Make roads where there seems to be no way and rivers where all appears dry. Refresh my heart, revive my spirit, and let Your new work in me become a testimony of Your power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Your story is not finished. God is already writing a new chapter. Expect it, believe it, and watch Him bring rivers into your desert.
